Metaverse Crimes Challenging, Say Legal Experts
Legal Experts are concerned about new-age crimes that are not covered by existing laws as a small but growing number of Indian users of the Metaverse, a virtual three-dimensional world that is dubbed as the next frontier of the internet, report cases of assault and sexual violation of their Digital Avatars.
A young woman from one of the nation's main metro areas filed legal action earlier this year for what she described as "violation" of her avatar on the virtual reality platform. However, according to lawyers being sought to address such matters, India's criminal and legal institutions, as well as those throughout the world, are still not prepared to manage the challenges posed by the Metaverse.
All acts in the Metaverse are carried out through these digital representations, which serve as avatars for people's virtual identities.
Cyberlaw expert Pavan Duggal, a member of the Metaverse Law Nucleus NSE 0.85 percent, a global organisation trying to establish standard rules on how to handle such virtual conflicts, stated that "there is a need for a new legal system."
Due to the Metaverse being a "global ecosystem, which makes it impossible to litigate," Duggal noted that "the current law doesn't recognise (digital) avatars."
"Attribution of identification and jurisdiction are two of the current problems," he stated.
The virtual 3D platform, which blends social interaction with virtual and augmented reality and enables users to enjoy diverse events online, is gaining attention despite still being in its early stages.
By 2026, 25% of individuals would spend an hour a day online for work, shopping, education, and leisure, according to Gartner, and 30% of businesses will have services and products prepared for the metaverse. Given the enormous potential it sees in the market, Facebook changed its name to Meta Platforms late last year and announced that it will spend $10 billion in the company. Many companies and people have begun to invest in purchasing land online and developing their virtual worlds.
Govt looking into it to resolve the cyber crimes by creating new laws against this Metaverse crimes.
