The Next Generation of Games Will Be in Augmented Reality

The Gaming Industry Boom

The gaming industry has grown in popularity over the years, particularly as people seek more inventive methods to socialize and interact with others. In fact, the gaming industry has eclipsed the sporting and film sectors in terms of scale and revenue.

According to SuperData, an industry research firm, the gaming industry expanded to $139.9 billion in 2020 and is anticipated to reach $260 billion by 2025. This business is booming thanks to technical developments and simple internet access, and Augmented Reality (AR) technology is further fueling the fire.

How Has AR Aided the Growth of the Gaming Industry?

AR is a fun and immersive way to turn 3D media and objects into a 3D area. It is in charge of redesigning top-tier games with outstanding sound effects and exciting imagery. In the summer of 2016, smart-phone wielding Pokemon Go gamers flooded plazas and parks, demonstrating the appeal of AR technology in games.

Assume you are unfamiliar with Pokemon Go. In that case, it is an augmented reality mobile game containing colourful avatars known as Pokemon who execute various acts in the natural and real environment. The game sold more than $5 billion in merchandise and was most people's first exposure to augmented reality, and it remains the most renowned application of the technology.

However, the game's treasured intellectual property is merely a minor component of its total success. Pikachu and Ash Ketchum can also be found in a variety of other games, literature, and movies. The interaction between computerised characters and real-world locations is the game's secret ingredient.

People prefer games that interact with reality rather than remove them from it, which is why AR is gaining traction faster than Virtual Reality (VR). AR can add excitement, insight, and discovery to even the most mundane situations. Peridot is yet another successful AR mobile game.

Peridot is filled with fauna and, like Pokémon Go, merges real-world and augmented reality. It is similar to Niantic's Tamagotchi game. In Peridot, players must engage with the creatures, train them, and nurture them. You would also have to help them develop into fully fledged adults before you could start breeding them again.

So far, mobile phones have had the most success with AR gaming. However, internet behemoths such as Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Facebook (NASDAQ:META), Magic Leap, and Snap (NYSE:SNAP) believe that the future of augmented reality will be accessed via specialised eyewear.
